John Franklin Laughery, 86, of Parkersburg, passed away January 17, 2017.

He was born in Wood County October 15, 1930, a son of the late John Laughery and Fonda (Beall) Laughery Newhouse.

John attended Wood County Schools, served four years in the U.S. Airforce. He worked at Penn Metal Co., American Viscose, Kardex, and The State of West Virginia where he retired as a Wood County Deputy Sheriff in 1988. John was a graduate of The West Virginia State Police Academy and was named "Outstanding Officer" of his class. He was a member of the AMA, F.A.C., The Fraternal Order of Police, Blennerhassett Lodge, The West Virginia Sheriffs Association, and The Wood County Deputy Sheriffs Association.

John is survived by his spouse of 61 years Mildred P. (Green) Laughery of Parkersburg, three children, Luanne Wolfe & (Larry) of Parkersburg, WV, John Laughery & (Donna) of Sandyville, WV, and James Laughery & (Linda) of Parkersburg, WV, five grandchildren, Jonathan Lowery, Jessica Bowling, Jason Wolfe, Caitlin Holman, and Jeff Wolfe, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his four sisters, Betty Springer, Ina Mae Benton, Elsie Johnson, and Ethel "Poots" Brookover.

Services will be Friday 11:00 AM at The Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with Pastor Daniel Meek officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen North Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be done by The American Legion Post 15.
