Oscar has sometimes been referred to as William Oscar Hammond Taylor but found not proof. He was born and raised in Lynchburg City, Virginia but left as a young man to go out West to Colorado. He has been seen in census record of 1880 near Denver with his Uncle Daniel Forgie Taylor but no one is certain when he arrived in Colorado. They are listed as boarders. They may have been prospecting according to family letters but we do know Oscar was working in a drug store at one point. After the death of his wife James Etta he sent his 6 month old baby boy and his daughter Genevieva to live with Oscar's parents in Virginia. He remarried the daughter of the drug store owner and moved several times to various places in Nevada where family assumes he was mining. Later in age he moved to live next door to son James Douglas in Northern Idaho but returned to Nevada near Reno/Sparks possibly in Olinhouse, NV.
