Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1949 to 1953), he played at the tackle, guard and defensive tackle positions in the National Football League with the Chicago Cardinals. Born William Anton Fischer, he attended Lane Tech High School in Illinois, prior to playing collegiate football at the University of Notre Dame. While with the Fighting Irish, Fischer experienced playing on two national championship teams. He distinguished himself as the recipient of the Outland Trophy as the Nation's Best Interior Lineman, in addition to earning All-American honors twice (1947 and 1948). Selected by the Chicago Cardinals as the tenth overall pick during the 1949 NFL Draft, he totaled 59 career regular season games. He achieved Pro-Bowl status three consecutive seasons (1950 to 1952). After retiring as a player, he served as an assistant for several years at Notre Dame. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
