British Actor. Born Gordon Fitzgerald Kaye, he was a BAFTA-nominated actor best known for playing René Artois in the British television comedy series 'Allo 'Allo!. He got his first big TV break on the soap 'Coronation Street', playing Bernard Butler, and went on to appear in a number of roles in sitcoms including 'Till Death Us Do Part', 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' and 'Are You Being Served?' before landing the role of the bumbling cafe owner Rene on the enormously popular television comedy series 'Allo 'Allo, which ran from 1982 to 1992 and was seen in more than 30 countries by an audience of some 200 million viewers. He would go on to appear in all 84 episodes of the sitcom, as well as a stage version. Kaye also starred in record-breaking stage runs in London’s West End at the Palladium and the Prince of Wales as well as theaters in America, Australia and New Zealand. His career almost came to an abrupt end in 1990 when he was critically injured during a storm in which high winds sent an advertising board through his car windshield, leaving him with severe head injuries. Kaye, whose last TV role was in a one-off return of 'Allo 'Allo! in 2007, died in a nursing home of natural causes.
