Professional Football Player. For seven seasons (1955 and 1958 to 1963), he played at the quarterback position in the National Football League with the Washington Redskins, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. Born Ralph Vincent Guglielmi, he attended Grandview Heights High School in Ohio. After earning scholarships in football, baseball and basketball, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame. While with the Fighting Irish, he distinguished himself as a defensive and offensive force on their football squad. In 1954, he achieved All-American honors and was fourth in voting for the Heisman Trophy. In 1955, he received MVP honors from the Collegiate All-Star Game. Selected by the Washington Redskins as the fourth overall pick during the 1955 NFL Draft, he played in 66 career regular season games. His career was interrupted, while he served with the United States Air Force for two years. While with the Redskins, he produced a career-high 1,547 passing yards. In 1962, he served as a backup to Y.A. Tittle and contributed to the New York Giants reaching of the NFL Title Game (1962). After his retirement from football, he worked in the insurance and automobile industries. He later established his computer supply company. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
