Helen Healey Fawcett, a former San Francisco resident, died peacefully in Lafayette in the early morning of Saturday, January 31st. For the past two years she has been surrounded by her loving family and the wonderful people at Happy Valley Home for Our Parents.

Helen Pershing Healey was born in Bradford, PA at the conclusion of World War I. Hence, her middle name was in honor of U.S. Army hero, General John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing.

Her parents, William J. Healey and Mary Hurley Healey, raised a total of seven children: Katherine Healey Gaffney, John Healey, Mary "Happy" Starr, William J. Healey, Jr., and Ann Healey Bird. Jean Elizabeth Healey died during childhood.

After graduating from Saint Bernard High School, Helen went to New York City to attend Finch College, known then as a finishing school. Not surprisingly, she was just beginning.

While visiting his daughter away from home for the first time, Mr. Healey took Helen to the Waldorf-Astoria to dance to Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians. It was at this time, according to family lore, she informed her father she was going to marry the trumpet player, Guy's brother, Lebert. True to her word, Helen married Lebert Lombardo on June 14, 1937 at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. Residing in Manhasset on Long Island, Helen raised Susan Ann Lombardo, Lebert Peter Lombardo, William Healey Lombardo, and John Michael Lombardo.

Helen and Lebert divorced in 1955. At age 36, she picked up her four kids and moved to Newport Beach, CA. Although not really a beach person, she made friends easily, especially Mary Adam (later Silvestri), Thelma and Howard Chastain. Shortly after Susan Ann and Peter moved to San Francisco to attend college, Helen followed with Bill and John in 1961.

Again, she made friends quickly, in particular, Paul and Hortie McComish. Helen, never one to shy away from a good time, was often seen with the "Ladies Who Lunch" crowd at Trader Vic's.

In 1972, Helen married the love of her life, Roger Knowlton Fawcett, at the Fairmont Hotel here in the city. She then moved to New York City with Roger, and eventually to Darien, CT after he sold his business and retired. Their home, Carry On, was the site of many happy and memorable family gatherings. Helen always knew the exact moment when everyone was expected to leave. Gazing across the front lawn, lifting her glass (champagne, of course) with great aplomb, she would announce: "Tail lights in the driveway." Her humor, among many things, will be greatly missed.

Her beloved Roger died in 1979. For the next 30 years, Helen traveled often to be with family, including her brother Johnny in Midland, TX, many nieces and nephews, plus children and grandchildren in California.

Predeceased by her daughter Susan Ann Lombardo (San Francisco 1966) and granddaughter Karen Ann Lombardo and brother Johnny Healey.

Helen is survived by her three sons; daughters-in-law Patricia Lombardo, Diane Lombardo, Cristina Calderone, Linda Freeman Lombardo; grandchildren Tony Lombardo, Adam Lombardo, Sarah Lombardo; step-grandson Jerry Izzo; great grandchildren Brigitte Lombardo, Bennett Lombardo, Bella Teresa Lombardo, and new great granddaughter (Lourdes) expected this month; Mr. Ah Pui Kam, Helen's loyal friend and housekeeper for 36 years.

Helen's family would especially like to thank Helen Onofrei and Maria Badea at Happy Valley Home for Our Parents for the outstanding care they gave her during the past two years.
