British Actor. He was a two-time Academy Award-nominated actor of stage and screen whose career spanned six decades. He studied art in his youth and went on to earn an art teacher's diploma. He decided to change careers and moved to London, where he won an acting scholarship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, studying there for two years while landing parts on television shows. In 1962, he made both his stage debut in 'Infanticide in the House of Fred Ginger', as well as his film debut in 'The Wild and the Willing'. Hurt would go on to play memorable characters in such films as 'A Man for All Seasons' (1966), 'The Sailor From Gibraltar' (1967), 'Sinful Davey' (1969), '10 Rillington Place' (1971), Watership Down' (1978), 'Alien' (1979), 'The Osterman Weekend' (1983), 'Champions' (1984), 'White Mischief' (1987), 'King Ralph' (1991), 'Rob Roy' (1995), 'V for Vendetta' (2005), 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' (2008), three Harry Potter films; 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' (2001), 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1' (2010), 'Part 2' (2011) and 'Jackie' (2016). Twice he was nominated for an Oscar for his work in the films 'Midnight Express' (1978) and 'The Elephant Man' (1980). Among TV shows and series he appeared in were 'Crime and Punishment', 'The Storyteller', 'Merlin' and 'Doctor Who'. In 2004, Hurt was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), in 2012, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, then in July 2015, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
