He decided to change careers and moved to London, where he won an acting scholarship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, studying there for two years while landing parts on television shows. Twice he was nominated for an Oscar for his work in the films 'Midnight Express' (1978) and 'The Elephant Man' (1980). Among TV shows and series he appeared in were 'Crime and Punishment', 'The Storyteller', 'Merlin' and 'Doctor Who'. In 2004, Hurt was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), in 2012, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, then in July 2015, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
