Edward F. Bowen, 76, of Acushnet passed away Monday April 4, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Madeline M. (Abraham) Bowen; they had been married for 50 years.


Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Timothy and Mary (O'Dowd) Bowen, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Acushnet.


Mr. Bowen was employed as a grocery receiver at various stores, including People's Market, Angelo's Supermarkets and Stop and Shop, for many years until his retirement.

"Umpire Ed," as he was commonly known, was an umpire for many years in various area leagues. He enjoyed watching his great-nephews' football games at Old Rochester Regional High School, spending time with his friends at Dunkin' Donuts, and watching the Red Sox and Patriots.


Survivors include his wife; a sister, Anne Sylvia; a nephew, Timothy Bowen and his wife, Maureen, and their children; and several additional nieces and nephews.


He was the twin brother of the late Francis Edward Bowen.


His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday April 15, 2016 at 10 AM at St. John Neumann Church in Freetown.
