Motion Picture Director. Born into a Jewish family in New York City, he studied Drama at Harvard University. He broke into the industry as an actor and experienced performing on the Broadway stage in the play "Tonight in Samarkand" (1955). He moved to Hollywood and began a lengthy association with television, as he directed episodes for such programs as "Peter Gunn," "Perry Mason," "The Donna Reed Show" and "The Fugitive," in addition to many others. In 1963, he received an Emmy Award nomination for his directing of an episode of the series "Alcoa Premier" titled "The Voice of Charlie Pont." He moved on to films and made his directing debut with the romantic farce "Any Wednesday" (1966), which was followed by "Sweet November" (1968) and the critically-aclaimed "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" (1968). Further films include "The Buttercup Chain" (1970), "The Girl from Petrovka" (1974) and "Reuben, Reuben" (1984). He was married to filmmaker Pola Miller from 1955 until her death in 2015.
