In June 1864, while on leave in St. Louis, MO, he appeared before the examination board for promotion to the Colored Troops. On 8 July 1864, he was ordered before said board in St. Louis, MO. In Sept. 1864, he returned to the front and was aid decamp to Brigadier General PILE, in New Orleans, LA. He was mustered out, 15 Mar. 1865; to accept promotion as Major in the 5th UNITED STATES COLORED CAVALRY.
On 30 Apr. 1865, under the command of Major General JOHN M. PALMER, United States Army, Henry M. Kidder was listed in organization of troops in the Department of Kentucky and he commanded the eight company's at Camp Nelson which made up the 5th United States Colored Troops.
This regiment served in the following; duty at Camp Ghent, Camp Paducah, Camp Nelson until Aug. 1865, then assigned to the Department of Arkansas until Mar. 1866.
Henry Kidder was mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1866.
Henry Kidder married Sarah Courtney Barnet, having two sons and two daughters.
