Mr. Whittington was born in Wilkes County on January 18, 1925 to Otto Kleeth and
Ruth Shepherd Whittington. In addition to his parents, O.K. was preceded in death
by his brother, William Whittington.
After serving as sergeant in the Army Air Corps, O.K. went on to graduate from Wake
Forest College in 1949 and forever remained a loyal Demon Deacon fan.
Mr. Whittington retired after working many years with Colonial Life and Accident
Insurance Company as a district sales manager for the Southeast. During his career,
he received numerous awards for excellence in leading his sales force in production.
O.K. and his wife were able to travel the world attending sales meetings in recogni-
tion of his accomplishments.
He was a longtime, faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served
as a deacon and superintendent of Sunday school.
Mr. Whittington is survived by his wife, Mildred; his son, Dr. Thomas Hughes Whitt-
ington and wife Robbin of Asheville, NC; daughter, Janet Salisbury and husband
Michael Salisbury of Marietta, GA; two grandsons, James Salisbury, 25, and Gregory
Salisbury, 23, also of Marietta, GA; and two step-grandsons, Brent Moore, 26, and
Cory Moore, 24.
The family will receive friends and family at Bass-Smith Funeral Home on Monday,
June 18, from 5-7 p.m. The funeral will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m.
on Tuesday, June 19, with Reverend Lynn Webber officiating, immediately followed
by burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, 237 Second
St. NW, Hickory, North Carolina 28601
