Caroline was the third of six children born to Charles Strayline and Catharine Wise. Three of her brothers (George, Charles and Theodore) were Civil War veterans. Theodore was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg at age 19.

Caroline married her husband, Edmond Wilson Colsher, in 1858. They had 5 children:
