Robert Pauley was the son of Joseph C. "Joe" and Martha Varney Pauley. His siblings were Edna May, William Charles, Joseph Edward, James Madison, Frank Andrew, Fred Varney, and Jack Hermon. He married Charlene Bevins. They had two daughters, Charlotte and Annette.
He was a graduate of Williamson High School in 1940, and was captain of the 1939-40 Wolfpack team. He worked at Williamson Supply Company before entering the service.
He was one of five brothers who served in the military during World War II. Robert of the Army Ordnance Department entered the service on January 6, 1943, and received training at Pomona, Guadalcanal Island, New Georgia, and Tarawa Islands. He was a former employee of the Pond Creek Colliery Company.
