James was one of five brothers who served in the military during World War II. Hentered the Marine Corps on June 18, 1936, and received boot training at Parris Island, South Carolina, and Quantico, Virginia. He was transferred to New York and served as a guard during the World's Fair. Later on, he was sent to Puerto Rico in the East Indies. He was given an honorable discharge after serving four years in the Marines and reenlisted in that branch of service on February 2, 1941. He was stationed at the Naval Ordnance Plant in South Charleston, West Virginia, for a number of months before being transferred to Camp Lee, Virginia and the Hawaiian Islands. He was killed at Iwo Jima only a few days before the war ended was caused by a mortar fired or misfired by fellow Marines.
