Warrant Officer 1 Shawn Thomas, of 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, died Feb. 2, 2017 from injuries he suffered in a vehicle accident while serving in Africa.

Thomas, 35, enlisted in July 2000 as a networking switching systems operator, according to his bio. He joined the Fort Bragg, North Carolina-based 3rd Special Forces Group in 2008 following the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course. He went warrant officer in 2016.

A Woodward hometown hero has left our world too soon. Shawn David Thomas was born on May 25, 1981. On February 2nd, 2017, Shawn was killed in a vehicle accident while deployed to Niger Africa. This was Shawn's 8th deployment defending our freedom while doing a job that he loved. Shawn was an Echo in the Special Forces, and he was everything a Green Beret should be. In December 2016, he graduated Warrant Officer school. He made his home in NC where he settled down with his wife Tara and four beautiful children Cheyenne, Taylor, Gavin, and Natylyn. Under his big beard, tattoos and giant muscles there was a small town Oklahoma boy that was grounded by his faith, strong values, and family. He will be missed by everyone that had the opportunity to meet him. May you now rest in peace little brother. You will never be forgotten.

Shawn is survived by his wife, Tara, and four children of North Carolina, parents David and Dusty Thomas of Woodward, brother Michael of Blanchard, and half-sister Kristy of Missouri.
