Robert Edmund LaBrecque, 89, of Bridgton, Maine died Monday morning at Bridgton Hospital. Robert was born in Westbrook, Maine on Christmas Day, 1918, the day his mother died in the influenza epidemic. Youngest of the 13 children of Anna Christman and Regis LaBrecque, he was raised in Westbrook by his aunts Alma LaBrecque and Regina Guitard and her husband Charles Guitard.
Robert was of the Catholic faith and educated in parochial schools. In his youth he enjoyed boating at the family cottage on Lake Sebago and was enthusiastic about aviation, aspiring to become a pilot.
In 1938 he joined the Naval Reserve and had qualified with high marks for flight school when he was reassigned due to the need for personnel with aptitude in the emerging field of electronics. During World War II he worked on the development of altitude-sensing fuses, and after the war he continued his career in electronics.
In 1948 he married his wife Sarah, whom he had charmed with his dancing. Bob worked for Raytheon Company for thirty years, first in the Sparrow missile program and then in plant expansion. For most of that time he owned a farmhouse in Chelmsford, Massachusetts where he and his wife raised five children, the youngest having Downs Syndrome. Bob was also fond of dogs, cats and horses and enjoyed tending to his barnyard projects.
After his retirement from Raytheon in 1982 he and his wife and youngest son spent time touring New England in their motor home. For most of the last twenty years they lived in Gorham, Maine. After a long illness Bob passed away peacefully, with the consolation of his family's love and of God's grace.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah S. LaBrecque; his daughter Patricia Grenda, with whom he resided this past year; his sons Alex LeBrecque, Stuart LaBrecque and his wife Kathy, Tom LaBrecque and his wife Heather, and Jamie LaBrecque; his son from a previous marriage, Robert E. LaBrecque, Jr.; his grandchildren Jennifer Cross, Julie Helwig, Meghan Perron, Michael Grenda, Beth LaBrecque, Nicki LaBrecque, Christopher LaBrecque, Matthew LaBrecque, Michelle LaBrecque, Melissa LaBrecque, and Amy Clark; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton on Friday May 9th from 5-7pm. The funeral will be conducted at 11:00am Saturday, May 10, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Annex Cemetery, Bridgton.
