MARK RYDER DROPS DEAD IN NEW YORK

While waiting in Grand Central station yesterday morning at 11 o'clock for a train to this city, Mark Ryder, one of hte best known residents and an extensive real estate operator here, dropped dead from heart disease. The body will be brought to his home here, and funeral arrangements made later.

Mr. Ryder spent the past week visiting with his niece, Mrs. Sheldon, in Brooklyn and started back to the terminal to return here. He had suffered from heart trouble for several years, but was under no exertion, so that it was a surprise when he suddenly toppled over in the station. Investigation into his pockets by the station attendants revealed cards bearing the address of Dr. Max Mailhouse, of this city. The latter was telephoned to , who in turn notified Dr. James F. Stetson, of the Union League club, where Mr. Ryder resided when here. Dr. Stetson notified Mr. Ryder's nephews and arrangements made for Sisk brothers to transfer the body here.

Mr. Ryder was one of the picturesque figures in the business world in this city. He was about 60 years old. Coming at an early age from Ireland he went into the liquor business in Water street, where he made a quite considerable fortune, it is understood, which he later invested in real estate to such advantage that he could be called a very wealthy man when he died. At the time his niece, Mrs. Sheldon, who was then Mrs. Smith, was shot by her husband, who afterwards committed suicide, he announced that he had made a will which would leave all of his estate, approximating probably $100,000, to her.

The block at 250 Water street is still known as the Ryder block. A block of houses on Columbus avenue, still bearing his name, though they had passed out of his hands at the time of his death, are testimony to the strides which he made in the real estate market. He retired from active participation in business ten years ago.

Mr. Ryder had little participation in the social life of the city, so speaking, his only affiliations being the Union League club, where he made his residence for the past several years when in this city and the Knights of St. Patrick. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Nora Keating, and a number of nieces and nephews. His wife, who was Margaret McConville, died 20 years ago.

Note:
Mark's application for a U.S. Passport states his birth date as November 1, 1857 in Granby, CT. The vital statistics registrar of Granby had no birth record on file. There is a baptismal record for Mark Ryder in Abbeyknockmoy, Galway on December 12, 1857. Given the aforementioned obituary, we can conclude Mark was born in Ireland.
