Artist, Designer and Director. In the late 1940s, he began work as a set designer and became one of Italy's leading artists in the field. Best known for a colorful, dreamlike style, his images graced opera stages, television, movies and animated films. As a film director, he won Oscar nominations for his interpretation of Rossini's "The Thieving Magpie" in 1965 and a second for "Pulcinella" in 1973. A versatile artist, he also created illustrations for children's books, decorations for cruise ships, as well as paintings and sculptures. In 1972, his work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale and an exhibition dedicated to his set designs was held at the Pompidou Center museum of contemporary art in Paris, in 1993.
