Harry and his mother and brother lived with his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Bettie Wright, in both the 1930 and 1940 censuses.

Harry was graduated from Highland Park High School. He was a member of the Order of DeMolay and of the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas. He joined the army shortly after graduation from high school in January 1942. He served in Hawaii almost a year before he was killed in action on Guadalcanal. He served with the 35th Infantry Division. His serial number was ASN 18079485.

Note: Harry was the son of Harry T. McAninch, who was born in Missouri. Although his mother was listed as a widow in the 1930 and 1940 censuses, there is evidence to suggest that his father and mother were divorced and that his father remarried and lived in Missouri for many years.
