Politician. He served as the 28th Attorney General of the state of California from January 3, 1983 to January 7, 1991. He graduated from Dartmouth College and earned his law degree from Stanford Law School in 1959. He later went on to serve as an assistant U.S. Attorney and then as the first federal public defender in Los Angeles. In 1975, after the incumbent passed away, he was appointed Los Angeles County District Attorney. He served in this position until July of 1981. In 1982 he, as a Democrat, was elected the Attorney General of California and served as the top law enforcement officer in the state until 1991. In 1990 he ran and lost against Dianne Feinstein for the Democratic nomination for Governor. He later went into private practice and served as president of the California State Bar in 2004 and 2005. He also spent several years as counsel in Mayer Brown LLP’s Los Angeles office. He passed away after a brief illness.
