James Frank Johnston, 88, of Marinette, WI passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the Oscar Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Mich. He was born December 29, 1928 in L'Anse, Mich. to Charles and Lydia (Olson) Johnston where he spent his early life.

Jim moved to Marinette with his family and resided here most of his life. Jim was a veteran of military service in the Korean War, serving in the United States Army from 1951 to '53.

He married the former Lois Schewe of Marinette on August 20, 1955.

For many years Jim worked in the woods as a logger and was also self-employed as a carpenter. He later owned his own business as a crane operator. During those years he also farmed and always enjoyed working the land and operating his tractor.

Jim is survived by his wife, Lois;
children: Gary of Marinette, WI; Ruth (Jon) Hasler of Appleton, WI; Gayle (Don) Noll of Idaho and Joel of Marinette, WI;
along with their half-brother, Peter (Julie) Henne of Nekoosa, Wis.;
six grandchildren: Zachary, Tyler, Joshua and Mitchell Johnston and Owen and Aron Hasler;
two great-grandchildren: Carson and Brantley;
a sister Elsie Fralick;
and two brothers: William (Pat) Johnston and Everette (Bev) Johnston.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel McClain; and three brothers: Edward and Henry and brother, Charles Johnston, who joined him on Friday; and an infant brother, George.

Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home in Marinette on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, from 4 until 6 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Christian Eisenbeis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
