Motion Picture and Television Director. Born to Jewish parents, his father was a tailor, he fled with his family to England following the Nazi's rise to power. Raised in Manchester, he was educated in Classics at University College of London and began his interest in film during this period. Following graduation, he landed a job with the BBC as an apprentice editor and later advanced to editor. He made his directing debut with the British TV documentary "No Mean City: Florence" (1965) and helmed episodes from the series "The Wednesday Play". He made his motion picture debut with his directing of Richard Burton in "Villain" (1971) and followed this with the thriller "Fear Is the Key" (1972). Other films include "Mr. Quilp" (1975) and "The Lucky Lads" (1976). Tuchner distinguished himself when he was the recipient of a BAFTA Award for his directing of an episode titled "Bar Mitzvah Boy" (1976), from the TV series "Play for Today". After relocating to Hollywood in 1978, he became identifiable for his directing of several acclaimed TV-Movies of which include "Summer of My German Soldier" (1978), "Haywire" (1980), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1982) and "Amos" (1985, which starred Kirk Douglas).
