Excerpt from his obituary, dated 28 November 1899. Printed in The Quincy Daily Whig, page 6.

"Charles M. Gilmer was born on the old Gilmer homestead north of Fowler, on Nov. 24, 1844, and last Friday, celebrated his 55th birthday. He was the son of Dr. John T. Gilmer, who came to this county from Kentucky back in the early thirties.

After a preparatory course at Abingdon college, he went to the Transylvania university at Lexington Kentucky where he graduated in 1868. In 1870, he came to this city, and a short time afterward, entered into a law partnership with Calvin A. Warren, one of the leading lights of the Quincy bar. This partnership continued until Mr. Warren's death some ten years later.

In 1873, he was married to Miss Matilda Heller, who, with four children, survives. They are: Calvin Warren Gilmer, Charles M. Gilmer Jr., and [Misses] Dorothy and Helen Gilmer.

W. B. Moore became associated with Dr. Gilmer in the practice of law in 1885, and remained with him ten years, when [then] he went to Chicago. Several years ago, the firm became known as Gilmer & James."
