PV2 Zeimer was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia. Zeimer died in Ramadi of injuries sustained when he came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. As a young boy, Matt was a member of the Boy Scouts and participated in junior high football. While in high school, he participated in choir and the Jobs for Montana Students Club. He graduated from Dawson County High School in Glendive, Montana in 2006. Upon graduation, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of joining the military on June 13, 2006. Matt was proud to be a soldier and was determined, helpful and kind. He didn't complain about going to Iraq. He was red, white and blue from the inside out and wanted to serve his country. On February 2, 2007, at close to 1:00 AM, his unit came under attack at Combat Outpost Grant in central Ramadi. It was an intense and coordinated attack launched by insurgents from nearby buildings and streets. He and his mentor, Spc Alan McPeek, ran together to the roof to fight back and stood shoulder to shoulder as they fought for their lives. But a shot fired from a recoilless rifle blasted through the reinforced concrete wall near the soldiers – the impact killed them both. Matt had been in Iraq barely a week and had arrived at his combat outpost, Combat Outpost Grant, just two hours before his death.
