Roman Catholic Cardinal. Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith at the Vatican from 1892 until his death in 1902. Archbishop of Gniezno and Poznan, Poland, from 1866 until retiring in 1896. Born of a noble family, he attended seminary in Warsaw, and was ordained to the priesthood on July 13, 1845. He served as the Papal Nuncio to Madrid, Libson, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Chile, and Brussels, before being chosen by Pope Pius IX to serve as Archbishop and Catholic Primate of Poland. He clashed with the policies of the Prussian Government during the Kulturkampf, and he was imprisoned from 1874 to 1876. While in prison, he was named a cardinal by Pope Pius IX on March 15, 1875. In 1885, he was appointed Secretary of Papal Briefs under Pope Leo XIII, who then appointed him to lead the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Cardinal Ledochowski went blind as his health failed during his later years, and after his death he was temporarily interred at Campo Verano in Rome, until the government agreed to allow his return to the Poznan Cathedral. As requested in his will, his heart was removed and enshrined at his parish church in Gorki, where he was born.He was born in Gorki.
