Maria Shekem, age 82, of Pleasant Prairie, died on Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Hospice House. Born January 10, 1924, in Maribor, Slovenia (Former Yugoslavia), she was the daughter of the late Franz and Maria (Kotzbek) Obrecht. Maria grew up in Maribor, Slovenia, attending Catholic schools and trade school there. As with many others, she and her family endured the great depression of the 1930's and suffered the hardships and ravages of World War II. At the end of the war, she met her husband Jamet at a refugee camp in Gratz, Austria.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jamet Shekem in 1973, and three brothers, Karli, Franz and Willi. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 17, at 2:30 p.m., at Rosehill Cemetery Henning Chapel, 5800 N. Ravenswood Avenue, Chicago. Entombment will follow. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, from 1:30 p.m., until the time of the service at the cemetery chapel.
