He was born in Wechmar, Germany, the son of Johann Hans Bach and Anna Schmied. He was an extremely talented musician. In 1641, he was appointed the organist at the two most prominent churches in Arnstadt--the Upper Church and the Dear Woman Church. He worked there for 50 years.
He married Eva Hoffman in 1642, the daughter of Christoph Hoffman. Eva's sister Barbara married Heinrich's brother Johann.
He became blind by 1692, and his son-in-law Christoph Herthum took over his duties as musician at the churches.
Heinrich and his wife had six children: Johann Christoph (born Dec 8, 1642); Johann Mattaeus (born Jan 3, 1645); Johann Michael (baptized Aug 9, 1648); Maria Katharina (born March 17, 1651, who married Christoph Herthum); Johann Gunter (baptized July 17, 1653); and Anna Elizabeth (born around 1656 and died young).
