Opera Singer. A bass-baritone, he created many roles in the French opera, including 'Athanael' in Jules Massenet's "Thaïs," 'Amrou' in Massenet's "Le Mage," 'Mathias' in Alfred Bruneau's "Messidor," 'Perithous' in Massenet's "Ariane," 'Marco Colonna' in Henry Fevrier's "Monna Vanna," and 'Fabius' in Massenet's "Roma." After studying at the Paris Conservatoire and winning first prizes for operatic singing, he made his debut in 1886 as 'Saint-Bris' in Giacomo Meyerbeer's "Les Huguenots" at the Paris Opera. He remained with that company until his retirement in 1927, rarely singing outside of France. He died at the age of 72. His recordings for G&T, Pathe, Zonophone, Fonotipia, Odeon, and Opera-Saphir are highly sought after by collectors.
