Margaret was from Caltra, County Galway, Ireland. She was one of four children of Laurence and Margaret Mannion. Margaret was travelling to America on the Titanic with her fiancé Martin Gallagher. Martin, who had helped to save the lives of many women in steerage, helped to swing Margaret over the side of the ship and into a lifeboat, with a rope and some braces. She was 28 at the time. After several years of domestic work in New York, Margaret returned to Ireland in 1919. The next year she married Martin Hopkins, who was also from Caltra. They made their home in Loughanboy, though in 1959 they moved further away to a farm in Laurencetown. The couple had three children. Margaret passed away at the age of eighty-six. ∼Titanic survivor.
