Kenneth Clarence Scherf Sr., 79, of New Kensington, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 12, 1925, in Fairmount City, he was a New Kensington resident since 1938, was a 1942 graduate of New Kensington Vocational School, and a 1946 graduate of Bliss Electrical School, Tacoma Park, Md. Mr. Scherf retired in 1990, after 45 years, from West Penn Power Company as division manager of its Alle-Kiski Division. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Kiski Valley United Way, New Kensington Area Industrial Development Corporation and Penn State, New Kensington Campus Advisory Board. He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church of New Kensington, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. Mr. Scherf was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and fought in the battles of Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland, the air offensive of Europe and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the Europe-Asia-Middle East Ribbon with six bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and a Distinguished Unit Badge with one oak leaf cluster. He was trained as a P-61 airplane engine mechanic. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Rosemarie "Ree" Johnson Scherf; two sons, Kenneth C. "K.C." (Kristin Runser) Scherf Jr., of Byesville, Ohio, and Bradford Scott (JoAnn Skubel Gallo) Scherf, of New Kensington; two daughters, Sandra R. (Robert L.) Ekas, of Cabot, and Cheryl Ann (James E.) Cline, of Salem Township; four grandchildren, Julie Ann Shearer, Robert L. Ekas Jr., Jeremy R. Scherf and Morgan N. McManaway; a great-granddaughter, Abbey Rose Shearer; his brother, Arthur J. (Corrine) Scherf, of Allegheny Township; and his sister, Hilda (Fred) Sera, of New Port Richey, Fla. Preceding him in death were his parents, Arthur Otto and Bessie Irene Dwyer Scherf; and sister, Dorothy Bonkavich. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., New Kensington, where a service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Bramwell Kjellgren, officiating. Private burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
