Capt. William "Bill" Gore, USMC, Ret., 85, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, April 26th, 2017 at Riverside Nursing Home with hospice services.
Funeral services for Capt. Gore will be held on Friday, April 28th, 2017 at 4:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Thomaston. Rev. Bill Barber and Rev. Brent Willis will officiate and burial with full military honors will follow in South View Cemetery. The family of Capt. Gore will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Capt. Gore was born on June 3, 1931 in Empire, GA., to the late Ernest L. and Lillian McAllister Gore, Sr. He had four brothers and two sisters, all of whom are deceased. After graduating Dodge County Schools, he joined the Marine Corps at the early age of 19 and proudly served for 20 wonderful years. He spent the first four years stateside at various Marine Corps bases, then served in Japan during the Korean War. Capt. Gore also served during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Da Nang. Later he was sent to Okinawa for a tour of duty and then to California where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Capt. Gore retired in 1970 at Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, NC, at the rank of Captain. After retirement the family moved to Perry where he was employed at several jobs before retiring with 16 years of service from the City of Perry in 1996. Following his retirement they moved to Augusta, and from there to Thomaston where he currently resided.
Capt. Gore was a Freemason and a very active member of Perry Shrine Club during his residence in Perry. While living in Augusta he became a National Hills Lion. He cherished the memories of that club and developed many friendships. He received the "Lion of the Year" Award for 1999-2000. After moving to Thomaston he became active in the Thomaston Lions Club and enjoyed many friendships there as he continued to serve.
Capt. Gore was a member of the First Baptist Church and attended the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Capt. Gore is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joann Johnson Gore; his daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Keith Gardner; and two grandsons, of whom he was very proud, William Russell Lamb and Clay Graham Lamb. He had two sisters-in-law, Janell Hudson and Jackie Van Houten, along with several nieces and nephews.
