For six seasons (1953 to 1958), he played at the guard and tackle positions in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Cardinals and Detroit Lions. Born Matthew Douglas Hogland, he was raised in Oregon where he attended Bend High School and later played collegiate football at Oregon State College. Selected by the San Francisco 49ers during the 8th round of the 1953 NFL Draft, he played in a remarkable 72 games consecutively. During the course of his career, he protected Hall of Fame quarterbacks Y.A. Tittle (with the 49ers) and Bobby Layne (with the Lions). After retiring from football, he worked as a high school football coach.
