Sylva Howard Hodgson, 87, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Feb. 10, 2007, in Salt Lake City, Utah, due to causes incident to her age.

Born on Jan. 26, 1920, in Teton City, Idaho, to Ira Stanton Howard and Carrie Archibald, Sylva married Jesse Moroni Hodgson on Nov. 26, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Jan. 5, 1945.

Sylva dedicated her life to the gospel of Jesus Christ and her six children. She and Jesse were pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bozeman, where he served as bishop for many years. She served as a Young Women president, in many ward Relief Society presidencies, as a Stake Relief Society president, and in many other callings.

When Jesse died in 1974, she increased her already notable dedication to searching out her ancestors. She served a Family History mission from 1991 to 1993 and continued serving in the Family History Library until her eyesight failed in 2000. Over the years she made the ordinances of salvation available to thousands of her and Jesse's ancestors.

Sylva also blessed the lives of her family and community with service in the Red Cross and as an excellent gardener, seamstress and cook. Her butter mints and chocolates were known far and wide.

She was preceded in death by her husband, and three brothers, Rex, Lucine (Pete), and Loy.

Sylva is survived by her sister, Delilah Staker; as well as by children: Sheryl Kay Weston (Lanny), David Jesse Hodgson (Debra), Kent Moroni Hodgson (Ileen), Daniel Howard Hodgson (Karen), Shelley Marie Pack (John), and Kerri Hodgson. With 27 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and more arriving all the time, her legacy of faith and service is assured.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the LDS Chapel, 2301 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 S) in Salt Lake City. Family and friends are invited to a viewing Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 South in Sandy, Utah, and prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A viewing will also be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Newdale Chapel, 350 Church St., Newdale, Idaho. Interment will be in the Teton-Newdale Cemetery.
