The second son of three children, Msgr. George Errington on his father's property at Clintz, near Richmond in Yorkshire, and entered at St. Cuthbert's College, Ushaw, near Durham, in 1814, where he remained until August 1821. Entering the English College in Rome, he received a 'proxime accessit' in dogmatic, and the second prize in scholastic theology. Earning furthermore a degree as doctor of divinity, he was ordained priest at St. John Lateran on December 22, 1827. Appointed vice-rector of the said college, after health broke down, he traveled for eight years through France and Spain in company of his eldest brother, Michael. President of St. Mary's College, Oscott, from August 1843 to June 1847, he moved as a missionary priest to Liverpool in February 1848, where he took charge of St. Nicholas's chapel. Thence in July 1849 he was sent to St. John's chapel in Salford, on the site of which he built the present St. John's Cathedral. On the establishment of the new catholic hierarchy in England, Errington was nominated the first bishop of Plymouth, receiving his episcopal consecration at St. John's, Salford, on July 25, 1851 from Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman.

In 1855, while Wiseman applied for a coadjutor, Errington was appointed, with the title of titular archbishop of Trebizond. When two years later, Henry Edward Manning was appointed provost of Westminster and established in Bayswater his community of the Oblates of St. Charles, Errington showed conscientious, but implacable hostility to Manning, embracing in it Wiseman himself. The estrangement was merely a matter of temperament, however it was grave enough for Errington to be deprived of his coadjutorship with right of succession by Pope Pius IX in July 1860, retiring to Prior Park, near Bath, where he died a full generation later, on January 19, 1886.
