The First Bishop of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, Monsignor David John Cashman was born in Bristol, England, and educated at Cotton College, Staffordshire and the English College, Rome, was ordained to the priesthood on December 24, 1938. Assigned to St. Mary and Angels, Stoke on Trent, he was successively named chaplain to the Duke of Norfolk, and later parish priest of St Mary's Church on Cadogan Street, Chelsea, London.

Elected auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Westminster by Pope Pius XII, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Cantanus on May 27, 1958 from Cardinal William Godfrey, assisted by Bishops Cyril Conrad Cowderoy and George Laurence Craven.

Appointed the first Bishop of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton on June 14, 1965, he died in office aged 58.
