Roman Catholic Cardinal. Veroli born Gaetano Bisleti entered seminary in Tivoli, later furthering his studies at the Pontifical Academy of Ecclesiastical Nobles in Rome. Ordained priest on September 20, 1878, he was soon named canon and archdeacon of the cathedral chapter of Veroli and later privy chamberlain de numero participantium of His Holiness, before being appointed canon of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica on September 28, 1889. Named domestic prelate and master of papal chamber on May 29, 1901 and reappointed on August 6, 1903, he went on to be named protonotary apostolic ad instar participantium on June 13, 1901 and prefect of the Papal Household on December 14, 1905. Commander of the Order of the Crown of Prussia, of the Order of Ferdinando IV of Tuscany and of the Order of the Crown of Siam, he was furthermore decorated with the grand crosses of the Royal Saxon Albrecht Order and of the Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Viçosa as well as with the medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice. Created cardinal deacon with the deaconry of Sant'Agata alla Suburra in the consistory of November 27, 1911 by Pope Pius X, Bisleti was named grand prior of the Sovereign Order of Malta on January 2, 1914. Appointed prefect of then newly erected Sacred Congregation for Seminaries and Universities on December 1, 1915, he acted as protector of the Pontifical North American College from 1918 until his death. As cardinal protodiacono, it was he who on February 12, 1922, crowned Cardinal Achille Ratti as Pope Pius XI. Opting for the order of cardinal priests, his deaconry was elevated pro illa vice to title on December 17, 1928. Named furthermore president of the Pontifical Commission of Biblical Studies and grand chancellor of the Pontifical Gregorian University and of its Pontifical Biblical Institute and its Oriental Institute, as well as president of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and grand chancellor of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. Succumbing to pneumonia while in Grottaferrata, his remains lie buried at the National Marian Shrine of l'Olivella in his native Veroli. It also to mention, that it was Bisleti who on October 21, 1911, presided over the marriage of Emperor Karl Franz Joseph Habsburg with Zita of Bourbon-Parma, the first beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004, and the wife considered at present likewise a candidate for beatification.
