Writer. As an author of more than four dozen books, she was best known for her biographies about many 18th and 19th century American history figures. Her career started with the publication of several short stories in Humpty Dumpty magazine in the 1950s. Her first book published was "Bunny Hopwell's First Spring" (1954), followed by "121 Cake Street" (1955). Because of her fascination with the American past, she later branched into writing American biography and history literature. Her works included "And Then What Happened, Paul Revere?" (1973), "Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams?" (1974), "Will You Sign Here, John Hancock?" (1976), "Traitor: The Case of Benedict Arnold" (1981), "Shh! We're Writing the Constitution" (1987) and "Bully for You, Teddy Roosevelt" (1990). She has received The Hans Christian Andersen Award, National Book Award, Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, Boston Globe Book Award and American Library Association Award. She died of natural causes at age 101.
