Jacqueline (Bierer) Lugar VELIKANJE

Jackie Bierer Lugar Velikanje died peacefully August 24, in her 89th year, at the home of her daughter, Vicki Pogorelc. She was the wife of Leland Lugar, a local surgeon, who died in 1974. Following his death, she married E. Frederick Velikanje, a local attorney who died in 2005. Albert Christian, an early WWII beau, found her via the internet in 2008, and they shared a blissful year in Indiana, before he died in 2009.She is survived by her four children: Vicki, Jeff Lugar (Pam), Becky Eastgard (Tom) and Bill Lugar (Cathie) and two step-sons: George Velikanje (Mavis), and Jim Velikanje (Janet); all of them loved her dearly as she did them. She was born in St. Louis, MO on May 23, 1922, to Jane and Kenneth Bierer and had one brother, Bill, all of whom preceded her in death.
She grew up in Aurora, MO, but spent her summers in Kansas City, MO with her favorite aunt and uncle. She graduated in Home Economics from Florida State College for Women and spent her dietetic internship year at Brooke General Hospital, San Antonio, TX, where she met her first husband. They moved to Yakima in 1946. In the summer of 1956, she and Lee moved the family to New Haven, CT while he attended an orthopedic residency. While there, she thrived on the theater both in New Haven and NYC. They returned to Yakima in 1959 and she remained until 2007. She enjoyed the cultural arts, in which she was actively involved: The Yakima Symphony, Capitol Theater, The Warehouse Theater, Community Concerts, the Yakima Valley Museum and others. She was a member of the Florence Wight Guild and the Junior League. Her first cultural love was the opera, and she was proud that she had continual season tickets to the Seattle Opera from the second year of its existence. She loved attending Wagner's Ring, which took her to Berlin, San Francisco, The Met, and Seattle, which she declared the world's best production. Jackie was an avid skier and board member of the White Pass Company. She was especially pleased with the new development at White Pass and was looking forward to a chairlift ride to the top with her son, Bill. She taught her children to love the adventure of travel, whether it was school vacations to Washington DC and the Bahamas in the '50s, a trip to Europe in the '60s, the opening of China in the '70s, or much of the US and the world with Lee and Fred, who both loved to travel with her. She was proud of all her children, and her eight grandchildren: Stefan, Carrie, Evan, Blake, Nels (Bre), Erik, Bob (MaryKay) and John (Staci) and several great grandchildren. Following a private Graveside Service, a Celebration of Her Life will take place at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the Yakima Country Club, 500 Country Club Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Capitol Theater or Yakima Symphony. Arrangements are being made through Keith and Keith Funeral Home, 902 W. Yakima Ave., Yakima, WA 98902.
