He attended Florida State University from 1960 to 1961. From 1961 to 1964, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps. He later was a sales representative for a heavy equipment firm. He served in the Suffolk County, New York legislature from 1976 to 1979. In 1978 he was elected as a member of the Conservative Party of New York to the United States House of Representatives and served for four terms before deciding to not seek another term in 1986. After he was first elected in 1978, he joined the Republican Party and continued as a member of that party until his tenure was over. After leaving Congress, he became a private advocate.
