Caleb was the son of Harvey Carman and Margaret Ellen Sharp. Brother to William l, HE Bud, Allen Blue, John, Priscilla Wallace, Sarah Elizabeth, and his twin Joshua Carman. He married Lottie Maples on December 22, 1931 in Abilene, Texas. They had two children, a son Thomas Dodd and a daughter Mary Ellen..

He served in World War I in France. Was in the CCC, at Buffalo Gap, Texas from 1932 until 1940. In 1941, the family moved to Tucson, Arizona where he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a clerk until his retirement in 1957. He enjoyed fishing and golfing. Was a devoted family man.
