Marilyn Ann Weaver Baughman, known to her friends as Nan, died in her home in New Bern on Saturday, May 20, 2017, with family around her.
Mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Navy wife, singer, dancer, lay minister, friend, Nan was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Nan was born in 1926 in Michigan City, Ill to Dorothy Williams Weaver and Robert Weaver, and grew up in Chicago.
Her father was a professor at the University and her mother was a pianist.
Nan enjoyed a childhood enriched by music, books, and community.
Her parents moved with her and her two brothers to Goshen, Indiana when Nan was a teenager.
At Goshen High School, Nan met Fred Baughman, who she would later marry.
Nan went on to Purdue University, where she discovered her passion for modern dance, which she pursued for many years after, including teaching dance to children.
When Fred graduated from the Naval Academy, Nan left the University and the two were married.
This began Nan's many years of service as a Navy Wife; a commitment not only to her husband's career, but in a larger sense to the US Navy and the USA.
The family was re-located frequently, and Nan did a superb job of making a new home every time.
As Fred advanced in rank, Nan supported him by entertaining in their home and accompanying him to official social functions.
Most importantly, she was his trusted counselor and her support made it possible for him to serve our country as a Rear Admiral in the US Navy.
Nan's career as a mother must especially be honored.
She brought a huge amount of energy and love to the mission of raising children.
She carried out her many responsibilities (from guiding and comforting, to cooking and cleaning, to time management, to name just a few) with gusto and creativity.
She cared about the injustice women and children face everyday, and she expressed this in the values she taught her family and modeled in her community.
An example of this was her volunteering as a court advocate for survivors of domestic violence.
Nan was a devout Christian. She was a member of the choir at Christ Episcopal Church and served as a Stephen Minister.
She lived her faith in a daily practice of prayer and deep self-reflection.
She grew in wisdom and compassion up to the end of her life, letting go and changing in ways that will continue to inspire each of us in her absence.
She is survived by her brother, Douglas Weaver; her children Lynne Salman, Elizabeth Baughman, Bruce Baughman, Laura Gautier, Julia Vining, Robert Baughman; her daughters-in law Meira Salman and Cathy Baughman; her sons-in-law Steven Vining and Leonard Gautier; her grandchildren Rachel Miles, Martina Shabram, Artur Gautier, Jonah Gautier, Abigail Johnson, Samuel Vining, Megan Baughman, William Baughman; and her great-granddaughter Hadley Johnson.
She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband Fred Baughman, grandson Robert Baughman, and canine companion Emma.
Services will be held on June 10 at 10AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 320 Pollock St., New Bern.
Burial to follow at a later date at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD.
Donations in her memory can be made to: Coastal Women's Shelter, 1333 S Glenburnie Rd., New Bern, and The Friends of Music of Christ Church, New Bern.
