Gus Martinez, 87, passed away on May 30, 2017 in McAllen, Texas.

Gus was born in Penitas, Texas on July 23, 1929. An Eagle Scout at the age of 14, he graduated class valedictorian from La Joya High School in 1947. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Gus received his commission in the United States Air Force, and served as an active duty officer for 29 years.

Upon retirement, he returned to South Texas where he taught math and science for 24 years in the McAllen Independent School District. Gus dedicated 25 years of volunteer work to the Palm City Lions Club and Serra Club.

He was married to Mila Martinez of McAllen, Texas for 54 years. They are survived by their daughters Lindy and Sophie.

There will be a rosary at Kreidler Funeral Home on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 7 pm. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Mission, Texas on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Final burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
