Abraham Lincoln was friends with Elizabeth's father-in-law, who lived in the home in the 1850's and 1860's. Elizabeth's family later lived in the home after the elder Strevell's went West in 1879.
In the possession of Charles and Elizabeth Strevell was the door jamb taken from the house, which was marked with Lincoln's height when he visited there. This was taken West with the family, and in 1901, it was still in their possession. By the way, Lincoln measured 6 feet and 4 inches tall.
The Strevell home still stands today and is open for tours.-See picture aove.
Elizabeth and her husband were married April 12, 1881, in Pontiac, Illinois. They both died in Utah, and were brought back to Illinois to be buried. Their only son Willie, died in 1889.
Mrs. Elizabeth Crawford Strevell's funeral was held in Utah and conducted by Rev. Malcolm Gwaltney of the First Presbyterian Church. She died at 3 a. m. at her residence on Friday, March 10, from causes incident to age. Following the services, the body was taken to Chicago for interment in the family plot. -The Salt Lake Tribune, March 12, 1950.
Elizabeth's husband's biological father was Z. H. Nettleton, and his mother remarried after his death. Charles was then adopted by Mr. Strevell and assumed the name Charles Nettleton Strevell. Charles' brother was John K. Nettleton.
