Before his election as president, he served as the secretary general of the province of Torba on the island of Mota Lava. He also was a Anglican priest. In 2014 he was elected president and took office on September 22 of that year. He would go on to serve until his passing. It was during his presidency that Vanuatu suffered one of its worst natural disasters in March of 2015 as Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam devastated the island nation. He appealed for international assistance to help the nation during the emergency. He passed away after suffering a heart attack.
