US Congressman. He was an apprentice seaman in the US Navy during World War I. He taught geology courses at Baylor University, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1924. He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1925 through 1929 and the State Senate from 1931 through 1937. He served twenty-one consecutive terms in the US House of Representatives, from January 3, 1937 until his resignation on December 31, 1978 and was the chairman of the Agriculture Committee from January 30, 1967 until January 30, 1975.
