Botswanan Statesman. He served as the 2nd President of Botswana from July 13, 1980 to March 31, 1998. He earned a scholarship to further his education at the Tiger Kloof Educational Institute in South Africa after graduating at the top of his class at Kanye school. After he graduated from Tiger Kloof in 1950, he assisted in the founding of the Seepapitso II Secondary School, the first institution of higher learning in his home region. He served as the school's headmaster for six years. During this period, he began to clash with Bathoen II, the region's ruler. In 1957 he earned a Master Farmer Certificate and he became one of the region's leading agriculturalists. He later worked for a local newspaper and became involved in the local government. In 1961 he was involved in the formation of the Botswana Democratic Party and four years later, was elected to the new Legislative Assembly. In early 1966 he became deputy prime minister and later that same year, was appointed the first vice president of Botswana (serving under President Seretse Khama). He would serve in this position until July 13, 1980 when Khama passed away and he took over as president. He served as president until retiring in 1998. During his long tenure, he emphasized development by working with various regional and international organizations. In 1988 he was injured after his executive jet was accidentally shot at by an Angolan Air Force MiG-23. After his tenure, he continued to work in the diplomatic area. He passed away after undergoing surgery for an unspecified reason.
