TOPSFIELD - Brian Hart Schwartz, 17, beloved son of Wendy Lynn Ryder of Topsfield and Richard "Chip" Schwartz of Marblehead, and brother of Jason Schwartz of Topsfield, died February 18, 2007 in a skiing accident at Snowbasin in Huntsville, Utah.
Brian was born on September 2, 1989 in Boston. As a youngster, Brian attended the Tara Montessori School of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. He then attended Steward Elementary School and Proctor Elementary School, both in Topsfield, Massachusetts, where he lived.
Brian attended Brookwood School in Manchester-by-the-Sea for grades six through eight. At Brookwood, Brian played lacrosse, basketball and soccer.
Brian then attended Masconomet Regional High School in Topsfield. He was a senior at Masconomet this year. At Masconomet, Brian played freshman soccer as well as baseball during his freshman and sophomore years. He was a member of the Varsity Ski Team for all four years. He joined the Masconomet Varsity Golf Team during his junior year, and served as captain of the team during his senior year. Last fall, Coach Ben Hodges wrote that Brian was a silent leader.
During his freshman year, Brian worked as a golf caddy at Myopia Hunt Club in Hamilton. In his sophomore year, Brian worked 40 hours per week during the summer as a camp counselor at the Ipswich YMCA. In his junior year, he participated in the Model U.N.program.
During his junior year, Brian took part in the Spanish Exchange Program and spent a semester in Spain, while his family hosted a student from Spain in turn.
Brian was an AP Honors student for most of his four years at Masconomet.
His hobbies included photography, fishing, sailing, skiing, golf and tennis.
Brian worked one day per week for two hours as a Peer Activity Leader at The Inn Between, operated by Horizons for the Homeless, working with children ages 1 ½ to 11 years old.
He worked at Staples in Danvers as an associate in the Copy Center.
As a senior, Brian had already been accepted at several colleges and was awaiting more responses.
Brian always saw the emotional side, the sensitive side, not usual for boys his age," said his mother, Wendy Lynn Ryder. "He was empathetic and could imagine walking in another's person's shoes. Brian would make us laugh. If we were down in the dumps, he would turn it around by making a face or a funny expression."
Brian was committed and devoted to his friends. The parent of one of Brian's classmates said, "Everyone knew and loved Schwartzie."
As brothers, Brian and Jason, 15, a freshman at Masconomet, would often say to one another My friends think you're so cool. He was a wonderful brother to Jason.
In addition to his beloved mother, father and brother, Brian is survived by his maternal grandmother, Anne D'Onofrio Ryder, of Cheshire, CT and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL, and her dear companion, Nickolas Bonadies, of CT and FL; his aunts, uncles and cousins: Kenneth and Christina Ryder, their children, Jennifer, Samantha, John and Scott, of Newport Beach, CA; Robin and Kenneth Kencel, and their children, Sarah and William, of Greenwich, CT; Paul and Kimberlee Ryder, and their children, Nicholas and Jonathan, of Issaquah, WA; Drs. Adam and Colleen Schwartz, and their children Hannah and Benjamin, of Pleasanton, CA; and his high school sweetheart, Julianne Margaret Smith, of Topsfield. Brian was the maternal grandson of the late Arnold Joseph Ryder and paternal grandson of the late Eleanore Thim and Richard Schwartz II.
A Funeral Service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 124 River Rd., Topsfield on Friday, February 23, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be held at St. Lawrence Cemetery, 280 Derby Ave.,West Haven, CT on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. The family has requested that visiting hours be held privately. The family has established the "Brian Hart Schwartz Memorial Scholarship," which will be awarded annually to a graduating senior at Masconomet Regional High School beginning this year.
