Phillip was one of four brothers who along with their father, Jacob, began a vinegar works that became Best and Company in Milwaukee. In 1859, Phillip remained as sole proprietor and changed the name to Phillip Best Brewing Company. His daughter, Maria, married a Pabst. Between 1864 and 1866, his sons-in-law, Pabst and Schandein, bought out his business. In 1889, the business officially became the Pabst Brewing Company.

Note: Per his wife's probate record his given name was Johann Philip. Per his obituary, due to illness, he was in Germany for the benefit of his health and his remains were going to be brought back to Milwaukee for burial in the family vault at Forest Home.
