US Congressman. A grandson of the founder of the King Ranch, Richard Kleberg was a member of one of the wealthiest families in Texas. He graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1905, studied law, and attained admission to the bar. In 1911 he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked on the King Ranch as foreman and manager, and was also active in other businesses, including banking. From 1929 to 1931 he was president of the board of trustees for the Texas College of Arts and Industry. In 1931 he won a special election to complete the Congressional term of Harry M. Wurzbach. He was reelected to six full terms, and served in the House of Representatives from November 1931 to January 1945. From 1931 to 1935 his chief staff assistant was future President Lyndon B. Johnson. Kleberg was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1944, and returned to his ranching and business activities. From 1951 to 1955 he was a member of the Texas Game and Fish Commission.
