Richard "Dick" Oberg, 54, died with dignity in the comfort of his home, in Gresham, Ore., from cancer on Aug. 5, 1998.

Originally from Merrill, Dick was a true Renaissance man who sought his dreams outside of Wisconsin. In 1962, he joined the Medic Corps of the US Army. While stationed in Berlin, he met his best life-long friend and future business partner, Bruce Campbell of Spokane, Washington. In April 1964, they returned to Spokane while on leave. Dick stayed at a local boarding house. Surprisingly, it was here that he met his soul mate and true heart, Miss Vivian Stoochinoff of Vancouver, British Columbia. With a 15-minute time limit on the boarding house pay phone, Miss Vivian was surprisingly annoyed at the tenacity her future husband plied her with every time she used the phone. It had to be love.

On Dec. 25, 1966 they were married in Las Vegas. After three joyous years, a son, Thom, was born on Jan. 3, 1969, in Milwaukee, Wis. Dick was a very vivacious and charismatic man who loved life and loved to give to others. In 1983, he personally paid for the funeral of a local Portland man whose family could not afford it.

Dick was an artist and enjoyed collecting fine antique oil paintings. Along with Bruce in 1984, they founded the Corinthian Rug Company of Portland, Oregon in Dick and Viv's garage. Slowly it grew to be a large custom area and hand-knotted rug gallery. Dick took great pride in the gallery's showroom where more times than not he was the greatest attraction. Creating something new and unique was of the greatest joy to him. He will be extremely missed by his family and multitudinous friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest, and brother, Jerry, both of Merrill.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Vivian; and son, Thom, both of Portland, Ore.; his mother, Gladys Oberg, Merrill; brothers, Gay (Sally) Oberg, David (Gayle) Oberg, both of Merrill, and Ron Oberg, Clarkston, Wash.; sisters, Nancy (Jerry) Kunkel, Merrill, and Sharon (James) Garski, Wausau.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 12, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill.

In lieu of flowers, Vivian and Thom request that a charitable donation in Dick's name be sent to: Sno-Cap Charities, 1740 S.E. 139th, Portland, Oregon 97233.
